Introduced for 1995, the 993-generation 911 Turbo rewrote the formula that had defined Porsche’s flagship for two decades. In place of the single-turbocharger, rear-wheel-drive layout of its predecessors, the new model paired its 3.6-liter flat six with twin turbochargers and, for the first time on a 911 Turbo, all-wheel drive adapted from the Carrera 4 and informed by the pioneering 959. The result was 408 horsepower delivered with newfound traction and civility, clothed in widened rear fenders and crowned by a fixed rear wing housing a pair of intercoolers. Quicker and more secure than any Turbo before it, the 993 would also prove the last of the line to employ Porsche’s famed air-cooled flat six, a distinction that has since placed it among the most sought-after of all modern 911s.

For 1997, Porsche Exclusive offered the X50 Power Kit, better known as Werksleistungssteigerung (WLS1) in markets outside the United States. For an additional DM 12,500, the X50 option equipped the already powerful 911 Turbo with larger turbochargers, revised engine tuning, an additional oil cooler, and stainless-steel exhaust tips. Peak output rose to 430 horsepower, matching the U.S.-market 911 Turbo S and the vaunted 993-generation 911 GT2.

This special WLS1-equipped 911 Turbo is one of 127 German-market WLS1 911 Turbos for 1997. Finished in Black Metallic over a full Black supple leather interior, its specification is additionally noteworthy for the deletion of the standard sunroof, a particularly desirable distinction. For taller drivers, the lack of a sunroof adds interior headroom and eliminates a common source of complications, while bringing the bodyshell closer to that of the 911’s period racing variants. Factory-fitted options include a special leather-covered center console, heated front seats, cruise control, and a Becker-Porsche CDR-21 stereo.

Invoices and prior ownership documentation on file and available for review reveal ownership in Bad Homburg, Germany, and later in Italy. Later, the Turbo WLS1 returned to Germany and was serviced by 11erecke in 2023. Following an inspection report compiled by Jochen Bader, the 911 Turbo was exported to the United States later that year. Once stateside, the rare Turbo joined a small but growing number of 911 Turbos equipped with the Works Power Increase in the U.S. While under current collector ownership, the car has seen servicing at Fred Lavery Porsche in 2025. At the time of cataloging, this rare X50-optioned 911 Turbo features 28,946 kilometers (17,986 miles) —a low number in line with the chassis’ operating hours.

Rarely seen in the United States, these specially ordered Rest of World 993-generation 911 Turbos are beginning to find their way into the consciousness of American collectors. Once forbidden fruit, these cars are introducing U.S.-based enthusiasts to the full breadth of the appointments, power, and engaging drive that Porsche’s Exclusive Department offered for Porsche’s most iconic 911 in the late 1990s, with this matching-numbers example representing a particularly compelling opportunity.
