It is the last GT3 to feature the legendary Mezger engine and is also considered the purest 911 of the modern era. We’re talking about none other than the quintessential Mezger masterpiece—the 997.2 GT3 with the 3.8L engine and 435PS—it is pure passion, stripped down to the essentials: performance, precision, and racing DNA.
Of course, there was also the limited-edition 4.0L version—but for many, the extra 65PS isn’t worth today’s premium of an additional CHF 350,000; and besides, that raises the question: do you actually drive a GT3 like this, or do you just keep it as an investment?
Our GT3 is meant to be driven, no question about it, even if all the factors would make it a pure collector’s car—but we’ll get to that later.
The 997.2 isn’t just the last GT3 with the Mezger engine; it’s also the last to feature the classic body style. For many, the 991 and 992 have become far too large and, aside from the rear-mounted 6-cylinder boxer engine, no longer have much in common with the original DNA of the 911. Too big, too heavy, too much electronics, too many bells and whistles, and often only available with PDK. Then there’s the production volume. While only a few GT3s were produced for the 996 and 997, the 991 and 992 GT3s have become mass-market products. It feels like every other one is either a GTS or a GT3, with production figures exceeding 10,000 units each—by comparison, only about 2,200 of the 997.2 GT3 were produced.
The Porsche brand has changed dramatically in recent years, focusing much more on volume than on quality—which may put some enthusiasts off collecting a newer 911. On the one hand, that’s a shame; on the other, it’s a great joy and, if you will, a rediscovery today for buyers of the upcoming GT3.
