Just when it seemed that a supercar successor to the 16-year-old, world-beating 959 was less likely than ever with Porsche pulling the plug on its sports racing program in 1999 and reassigning its motorsport engineers to the utilitarian Cayenne, Porsche shocked visitors at the 2000 Paris Auto Show with a concept dubbed the “Carrera GT.” Unbeknownst to Porsche racing fans, the concept’s 5.5-liter V10 engine, internally designated “Type 3512,” traced its origins back to the early 1990s when Porsche was an engine supplier in Formula 1.
Meanwhile, Porsche’s legendary sports racing car program during this period is recognized as the most dominant in the marque’s history, with the Group C program—headlined by the 956/962 series—achieving five consecutive World Sportscar Championships and six consecutive overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1982 to 1987. The three-year 911 GT1 program extended Porsche’s international sportscar racing efforts into the late 1990s, until the cancellation of the production-based GT1 class and the expansion of dedicated Le Mans Prototype (LMP) racers at the turn of the millennium.
Reviving the long-shelved “Type 3512” engine, the engineers in Zuffenhausen pursued the development of an LMP900-class car internally designated “9R3,” with the now 5.5-liter V10 mounted amidships. However, like its Formula 1 predecessor, Project 9R3 was abruptly canceled after building just one running prototype, never to go racing. Thankfully, the Porsche production department deemed the V10 suitable for the mid-engine Carrera GT concept, which entered production in 2003 with a target of 1,500 units.
As Porsche’s halo supercar of the decade, the Carrera GT’s options list was minimal. In fact, Porsche’s official price list stated: “In order to minimize the vehicle’s weight for possible competition use, the Carrera GT is delivered as standard without air conditioning and without an audio system. However, these items, together with all other personalization features, are available as no-cost options.” The Carrera GT’s color palette was equally rigid, with just five basic colors to choose from. Out of 1,270 cars produced for the worldwide market, just 80 examples were selected in the classic shade of Indischrot or Guards Red. A staple of Porsche production and racing cars since 1974, Guards Red-finished Carrera GTs such as this example, limitation number 1056, are exceedingly rare, comprising just 6.3 percent of worldwide production.
Completed on 22 September 2005 for the German market, this example not only sports the rarest and arguably most attractive Carrera GT production color, Guards Red, but also an equally attractive Dark Grey leather interior. Options selected at the time of ordering included ‘XT’ bucket seats for both driver and passenger, adding 15 mm to the width of the seat, Manual Air Conditioning, and CD Radio Porsche Online Pro with BOSE Sound System.
Many Carrera GT owners elected to accept delivery of their new supersportwagen with pomp and circumstance at Porsche’s new Leipzig factory. Its first owner recorded in the original service book chose to do just that upon delivery on 12 October 2005. A 41-page report conducted by Carrera GT expert Jochen Bader as recently as May 2026 is available for review and records only four German caretakers—the most recent who held the car for nearly 15 years adding just around 1,000 kilometers while treating the rare Porsche as a collector car—prior to the consignor’s acquisition and confirms it retains its original engine and transmission and its original coat of Guards Red paint. Numerous service stamps within the service book record regular services exclusively at Porsche Zentrum Stuttgart between 2009 and 2025, with the most recent service conducted in April 2025 at 20,353 kilometers. In addition, the Carrera GT has undergone the important APA3 suspension recall campaign by Porsche Zentrum Stuttgart in April 2025, that included an engine service and fresh battery. Furthermore, this special Carrera GT retains its tools, centerlock socket, and a partial set of factory-supplied Dark Grey Italian luggage.
Offered with a highly collectible specification and well-preserved condition, Carrera GT number 1056 remains perhaps the ultimate collectible modern Porsche. With little interference from the corner offices during its design and production phases, the Carrera GT is an exquisite example of race-honed engineering brought to life on the road. The motorsport-pedigreed 605-horsepower, 5.7-liter V10 is a precision instrument that requires not only a confident right foot but the ability to properly maintain its rev-happy nature to stay in top form. With just 20,423 kilometers from new at time of cataloging, factory Guards Red paint, matching drivetrain, long-term German ownership, documented Porsche maintenance and a recent specialist inspection confirming its exceptional originality, Carrera GT number 1056 represents an unusually complete and exceptionally original example of Porsche’s landmark analog supercar.
