For the 993 series, Porsche ditched the upright headlamps in favour of a more aerodynamic look pioneered by the Porsche 959, although many of the styling changes were evolutionary. For most Porsche fans, this is the ultimate series of the 911.

The 911’s horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder engine is located at the rear, like that of a racing car. Putting the weight of the engine on the driven wheels provides increased traction. The 911 is built to withstand extremes of stress which are rarely encountered on public roads. Many of its components were originally developed for the racetrack. The 993 has a hydraulic dual circuit braking system with 4-piston aluminium fixed calipers. All brakes are cross drilled, ensuring optimal braking even in wet conditions. The brakes feel ridiculously powerful and the engine note of this – the last of the air-cooled 911s – is simply to die for.

At low speeds it understeers but push a little harder and the rear end comes into play. Tail-wagging oversteer is there on-demand if you want it. The engine produces 272 hp, and 0-62 mph takes just 5.3 seconds. Top speed is well over 160 miles per hour.

All it takes is a touch of a button to lower the hood and let the sun in; fully automatically. Then away you go, the sky’s the limit. The hood is made from specially treated cotton for outstanding weather resistance and the three-ply construction effectively shuts out the weather.
