In 1973, Porsche brought a special prototype to the Paris Motor Show, a car which heralded the coming of what became one of the most iconic models to ever come out of Stuttgart: the first 911 Turbo, lovingly known by its ‘930’ chassis code. That prototype was merely a statement of intent – the first road-going 911 with a turbocharged motor was built in 1974 for Louise Porsche for her 70th birthday. Later that year, the first pre-production 930s were completed, with series production commencing in 1975. Americans had to wait until 1976 to get their hands on the car that quickly earned a nickname, “Widowmaker” – named so for its uncompromising reputation and a propensity to put anyone who failed to respect its immense performance into a ditch (or worse). Interestingly, while the car was simply badged as a “Turbo” elsewhere, US-spec cars were marketed with “Turbo Carrera” nomenclature for the first several years.

The world’s fastest production car upon release with a top speed of 155mph, the 930 proved the 911 could be a daily drivable supercar. Early cars did without an intercooler, allowing them to feature ‘whale tail’ spoilers instead of the larger ‘tea tray’ introduced in 1978. A heavier duty suspension and brakes ensured the car had handling and braking performance to match its immense acceleration. Engineers found the car’s prodigious torque output was too much for the five-speed used in standard 911s, so a purpose-built four-speed was produced for the 930. All-in-all, the 930 quickly became synonymous with Porsche performance and is, to this day, an awe-inspiring supercar. At just over 2,600 pounds it is lighter and far less complex than later Turbos, which is exactly why early examples remain the most coveted among serious collectors: pure, rare, and still startlingly potent.
