Racing car, 1969

Highlights

  • Believed to be one of only two complete ground-up automobiles built by ANDIAL
  • ANDIAL-built 3.5-liter twin-plug 911 engine producing 300+ horsepower

Built over decades through a close collaboration between Kurt Zimmerman and Dieter Inzenhofer’s team at ANDIAL, this extraordinary Porsche is believed to be one of only two complete ground-up automobiles constructed by the legendary Southern California Porsche specialist.

Powered by an ANDIAL-built 3.5-liter twin-plug 911 flat-six with slide-valve induction producing more than 300 horsepower, the car combines an exceptionally lightweight 1969 Porsche 912 chassis with genuine factory Porsche Motorsport components spanning multiple generations of competition cars. Among them are 911R body panels produced from factory molds, 906 forged rocker arms, RSR slide-valve induction, a 935 front oil tank and chassis bracing system, a 917 exhaust bracket, 962 titanium engine hardware, and a later GT3 oil pump, each selected with a specific engineering purpose in mind.

The vehicle in detail

This 1969 Porsche 912 was acquired by Kurt Zimmerman in 1980 and developed over the next three decades into a unique, competition-focused Porsche. Zimmerman’s career began as a Porsche dealership mechanic before joining John von Neumann’s Porsche/Volkswagen of America Pacific distributorship. He later accepted a position at Richie Ginther Racing, where he apprenticed under Ginther and crew chief Harold Broughton. During his time at Richie Ginther Racing, Zimmerman was inspired by Ginther’s 1971 911 S/T and the preparation philosophies that defined the team. He envisioned the project as a tribute to Ginther’s innovative approach to engineering and race car preparation.

Rather than replicating Ginther’s 911 S/T outright or simply modifying an existing Porsche, Zimmerman embarked on a decades-long collaboration with Dieter Inzenhofer and the team at ANDIAL, continually refining the car as new ideas, engineering solutions, and genuine Porsche Motorsport components became available. The exceptionally original, rust-free 1969 Porsche 912 finished in Polo Red was selected as the foundation for the project, not as a matter of convenience, but for what Zimmerman and the ANDIAL team regarded as the lightest long-wheelbase F-body chassis Porsche produced.

The car evolved over approximately thirty years as Zimmerman’s vision and ANDIAL’s craftsmanship continued to develop. Genuine factory Porsche Motorsport components spanning multiple generations of competition cars were carefully selected and incorporated throughout the build, including factory 906 forged rocker arms and aluminum timing sprockets, 911R lightweight body panels produced from factory molds, factory RSR twin-plug ignition and slide-valve induction components, a 935 front oil tank and chassis cross-bracing system, factory 930 braking components, and 962 titanium engine hardware, among countless other details. Every component was selected with a specific engineering objective in mind, from reducing weight and improving cooling to increasing strength and optimizing weight distribution. As improved Porsche engineering solutions became available, the car continued to be refined, exemplified by the later adoption of a GT3 oil pump. The result is a cohesive, thoughtfully engineered automobile.

Power comes from an ANDIAL-built 3.5-liter twin-plug flat-six featuring slide-valve induction and producing more than 300 horsepower. Extensive use of aluminum, magnesium, titanium, fiberglass, and other lightweight materials contributes to an approximate curb weight of just 1,815 pounds, creating an exceptionally responsive driver’s car unlike virtually any other early Porsche. While ANDIAL became world renowned for its Porsche engines, race support, and performance upgrades, complete ground-up automobile builds were extraordinarily rare. According to the current owner and those involved in the project, this Porsche is believed to be one of only two complete automobiles ever constructed by ANDIAL.

Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file containing decades of invoices, engineering notes, build specifications, period documentation, and supporting records chronicling its development. The combination of ANDIAL’s craftsmanship, genuine factory Porsche Motorsport components, meticulous engineering, and extensive documentation makes this an exceptional opportunity for the discerning collector seeking a truly unique early Porsche.

Current Owner Note
“As the current owner of this ANDIAL hot rod, I thought I’d chime in and share my experience. I first saw the car in Dieter Inzenhofer’s (the “DI” of ANDIAL) shop in Orange County. A mutual friend invited me to go visit with Dieter and to have lunch with him. When we got to the shop, Dieter was working on the car and, thinking it was his, I proceeded to bombard him with endless questions. Finally, perhaps as an attempt to get me to stop, he mentioned that the owner Kurt had flirted with the idea of selling the car. I told Dieter that if it was okay, I’d love the chance to talk with Kurt to see what was possible.

For the record, I’ve never been one who was very smitten with modified Porsche cars. I can certainly appreciate what they are, they’re just generally not my thing. This car was clearly something different. Every single component. Every fastener. The engine. The suspension set up. Literally every facet of the car had been considered and they used parts to which ANDIAL had completely unique access. The exhaust bracket off of a 917. The MFI pump off of an RSR. The roll cage from a 935, the shift tower from an SCRS, and on and on and on. This simply wasn’t just a hot rod; that’s extremely over-reductive. Dieter built this car from the ground up using his wisdom and the best in-period elements. This really appealed to my “purist” sensibilities in a way that most other modified Porsche cars simply don’t.

The opportunity to own this car came as a chance of a lifetime. ANDIAL only ever built two complete cars and this is one of them. It’s so special and its purpose and intent is so clear. There’s something so magical that happens when driving this car. It’s really a 1 + 1 = 3 type of thing. It well and truly is so much more than the sum of the parts. Getting to pilot this car through the Malibu canyons has been a tremendous thrill and a joy; it’s almost transcendent. That said, I’ve been stuck in hours of miserable traffic on the 405 and it managed that fine too.

Unfortunately, life doesn’t always go on a predictable path and after a relatively short period of ownership, it’s time for me to pass on the car to its next caretaker, just as Kurt passed it on to me.”
