The factory performance upgrade (WLS, internally designated as X50 ) increased the power of the Porsche 911 (996) Turbo from the standard 420 PS to 450 PS. It included comprehensive hardware and software modifications to the legendary Mezger engine.
Key technical components of the WLS package:
- Turbochargers: Larger turbochargers (K24 chargers instead of the K16 found on the production model).
- Intercoolers: Larger intercoolers for improved efficiency.
- Exhaust system: Flow-optimized catalytic converters and modified mufflers.
- Engine control unit: Modified engine electronics (including software tuning to increase boost pressure).
- Transmission: Reinforced transmission to withstand the increased torque.
Performance data comparison:
- Power: 450 PS (331 kW) at 5,700 rpm (standard: 420 PS).
- Torque: 620 Nm from 3,500 to 4,500 rpm (standard: 560 Nm).
- Performance: The 0-100 kph sprint time is reduced to 3.9 seconds.
Interesting facts:
Starting with the 2004 model year, this WLS package became standard equipment on the exclusive 996 Turbo S special edition. On that model, the package was also combined with the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) as factory equipment.
The Tiptronic S in the Porsche Turbo with WLS (Factory Performance Upgrade) is a classic 5-speed torque-converter automatic transmission with an integrated manual shift function via steering wheel buttons (paddle shifters).
Key details at a glance:
- How it works: It is an automatic transmission that shifts comfortably in normal “D” mode but can also be driven sportily using a manual mode.
- The “S”: The letter S stands for Sport paddle shifters (steering wheel buttons ), which allow the driver to actively change gears without taking their hands off the steering wheel.
- Intelligent software: The transmission features various shift programs that recognize the driving style (e.g., sporty acceleration) and adjust gear changes accordingly. It protects against over-revving by automatically shifting up just before the rev limiter kicks in, and prevents undesirable gear changes when cornering. []
- Combination with WLS: The factory performance upgrade (often known as Code X50 ) increased the power output of the Porsche 911 Turbo (e.g., the 996 series) to 450 PS. With the Tiptronic S, this enormous power could be driven comfortably and in a way suitable for everyday use, even though it shifts somewhat more sluggishly compared to modern dual-clutch transmissions (PDK).
