The 356 represents the origin of it all. It was the first time Porsche built its own production car, with its own distinct identity, and positioned it in a high-end price segment for reasons strictly tied to the engineering of its time. Its success was immediate and global, and its impact on sports car culture is still felt today.
The model’s huge commercial success—especially in the United States through its importer Max Hoffmann—prompted Porsche to develop a more affordable version for the American market. This led to the creation of the 356 Speedster, which later also became an icon of the brand thanks to its connection to the legendary actor James Dean.
In Europe, the brand’s sales department observed that the convertible versions were typically driven with the top up. This insight led them to produce the hardtop version, designed by the renowned coachbuilder Karmann. A convertible with the aesthetics of a hardtop: pure Porsche logic.
