Porsche 911 Carrera RS

Porsche 911 Carrera RS

Coupé, 1973

Highlights

  • One of only 16 produced in Glacier Blue
  • Comprehensive Restoration Report
  • Just had major maintenance at Porsche

Chassis #1563 is a genuine Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Touring M472, originally delivered to the German market in the exceptionally rare Glacier Blue, one of only 16 RS examples produced in this colour. Today the car is Grandprix white. Its remarkable factory specification includes highly desirable M410 Recaro Sport Seats, fitted to only 99 cars, as well as an electric sliding roof and Touring Package. Porsche Classic has thoroughly inspected the car and confirmed both its original chassis and body numbers, establishing its identity as a genuine Carrera RS 2.7. Restored in 2009–2010 and driven less than 500 km since, the car has recently received a comprehensive technical service by Porsche. With its extraordinary original colour, rare options, extensive restoration documentation and Porsche Classic inspection, #1563 represents a particularly compelling example of one of Porsche’s most iconic 911s.

The vehicle in detail

A true RS. An exceptional configuration. A remarkable story.

Some cars hardly need any introduction. The Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is one such car. Developed as a homologation model and built with a single, clear goal in mind, the RS went on to become one of the most important and coveted 911s of all time. The 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine, its light weight, the wider body, and the now-legendary ducktail made it special in 1973. More than fifty years later, that hasn’t changed.

The model we are offering here is chassis #1563, a Carrera RS 2.7 Touring M472, originally delivered to the German market. It is primarily its original configuration that makes #1563 special.

Glacier Blue – one of only 16

Today, this Carrera RS is shown in Grand Prix White with blue Carrera stripes and matching blue Fuchs wheels (the first photo is an AI-generated rendering of what the car would look like in Glacier Blue). An iconic RS combination, but not the color in which #1563 left the factory in 1973. According to the manufacturer’s records, it was originally finished in the exceptionally rare Glacier Blue. Only 16 Carrera RS 2.7s were built in Glacier Blue. And that original history doesn’t just exist on paper. The car comes with a very comprehensive photographic restoration file. In several photos, traces of the original blue paint are still visible in hard-to-reach corners of the body. A particularly tangible reminder of the rare factory specification with which #1563 began its life.

Extremely well-equipped

The list of options also makes this RS stand out.

While the Carrera RS was essentially all about simplicity and performance, #1563—as an M472 Touring—was surprisingly well-equipped:

M102 – Heated rear window

M258 – Headrests, left and right

M410 – Recaro Sport Seats

M472 – Touring Package

M549 – Shoulder/lap belts

M650 – Electric Sliding Roof

The M410 Recaro Sport Seats, in particular, are a very attractive option. According to the available RS documentation, only 99 units were equipped with this feature. The electric sunroof—the M650—was also anything but a given on a Carrera RS: only 376 units were reportedly equipped with this option. A Glacier Blue RS is exceptional in its own right. The combination of the Recaro Sport Seats, the power sunroof, and the other factory options makes the original configuration of #1563 all the more interesting.

Inspected by Porsche Classic

To determine the car’s identity and condition, #1563 was sent to Porsche Classic for a thorough inspection. Porsche identified the car as a genuine 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Coupé Touring M472. Both the chassis number and the body number were determined to be original and correct.

Back on the road after a long hiatus

Prior to the inspection and since its restoration in 2009–2010, the car had been driven less than 500 km and had been out of service in recent years. Porsche Classic therefore recommended that it undergo a thorough technical service before it was put back into regular use. That advice was followed. Porsche performed a major service, which included replacing the engine oil and filters, spark plugs, transmission fluid, and brake fluid.
