It is considered one of the most significant vehicles in sports car history and an icon among all Porsche 911s. Introduced in 1972 for the 1973 model year, the Carrera RS 2.7 was developed with the clear goal of meeting the requirements for use in motorsports. The abbreviation RS stands for “Rennsport” (racing) and underscores the uncompromising character of this model. It was based on the then-current 911 series, but the Carrera RS underwent numerous technical and design modifications. At its heart is the air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 2.7 liters. By increasing the bore to 90 millimeters, the displacement was raised compared to the 2.4-liter production engine. The engine produces 210 PS at 6,300 revolutions per minute and delivers a maximum torque of 255 Nm at 5,100 revolutions per minute. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. As a result, the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in about 5.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of approximately 240 kph. A defining feature of the Carrera RS 2.7 is its striking rear spoiler, which earned the nickname “duck’s tail” due to its shape. This spoiler was not only a visual statement but also an aerodynamically effective component that reduced lift at the rear axle and improved driving stability at high speeds. Combined with widened rear fenders, wider wheels, and a lowered body, the RS took on a significantly sportier appearance.
The RS served as the basis for numerous successful race versions, such as the RSR, and had a lasting impact on the brand’s sporty image. Porsche originally planned a small production run for homologation, but demand exceeded all expectations. A total of 1,580 units of the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 were built, including just 204 lightweight models. The lightweight variant, internally designated M471, was the most uncompromising version. To save weight, Porsche eliminated comfort features and reduced the use of sound-deadening materials. Thinner sheet metal, thinner windows, simple door panels with pull loops instead of door handles, and lightweight sports seats were all part of the design. Even details such as the clock and the rear seats were omitted. As a result, the weight dropped to around 960 kilograms, significantly less than that of the Touring version, which was designed with greater emphasis on comfort and weighed 1,075 kilograms. Today, the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Leichtbau ranks among the most sought-after classic Porsche models. Its combination of low weight, a high-revving engine, and direct handling makes it a purist’s driver’s car that embodies the spirit of Porsche’s early involvement in motorsports in a particularly concentrated form.

Chassis 0654 was first delivered to its original owner in France in 1973. It is one of 204 lightweight 2.7 RS models and one of only eight reported to have left the factory painted in Viper Green. In the mid-1970s, this car competed in numerous races in France, including the 1975 24 Hours of Le Mans, where, bearing start number 87 and driven by Boubet and Vainqueur, it secured victory in the combined class. Another major class victory was also achieved in 1975 at the Monte Carlo Rally with start number 56, driven by Rouget and Vainqueur, where the car crossed the finish line first among all Group 3 vehicles. In addition, the Porsche was entered in the Tour de France as well as in races of the Course de Côte series, resulting in several victories. Historical photographs from many races, including Le Mans, are available. After its active racing career, the viper-green RS 2.7 Leichtbau remained in France until we recently purchased it and brought it to Germany. Under its previous owner, the car was fully restored, retaining the original color scheme and the original engine. Since then, the vehicle has been driven only 280 kilometers. The previous owner from Monaco, who owned the RS for 25 years, received a certificate from Porsche France in 2012 containing all factory information regarding the original specifications, serial numbers, and delivery details. This was followed in 2024 by an appraisal report in which the vehicle was described as being in very good condition.
