The GTs were equipped with 911S brakes (and even 908 brakes for endurance races), additional chassis reinforcement, widened steel fenders, a front-mounted oil cooler, and fiberglass bumpers. The 914-6 GT was a racing-configured version of the 914-6, with the factory offering the GT package as an option. It quickly became known as the 914-6 GT and was entered in competition with various engine configurations.
These included the “T” specification, which used a basic 911 engine. Another popular configuration was a converted Carrera 6 engine. Unfortunately for the 914/6, the same amount of money could buy a 2.5-liter racing 911, giving its owner a much better chance of achieving a strong result in competition. Consequently, relatively few 914s were entered in races, making them particularly rare today.
The car is fitted with 914 GT sport seats, which are particularly rare and extremely difficult to find today. The starter motor has recently been replaced, and the windscreen is brand new, fitted with an original Porsche part.
For the engine, an aluminium 901/6 engine case was chosen in preference to the original magnesium case. This solution helps reduce the oil seepage and leakage issues commonly associated with period magnesium engine cases, while providing an excellent foundation for this performance-oriented build.
This 914 GT/6 Tribute delivers a truly engaging driving experience. It stands out for its balance, precision, power, light weight and efficiency, while retaining the distinctive character that makes mid-engine sports cars so special.
The mesmerising sound of the flat-six engine is an integral part of the experience. The gearbox is remarkably precise for a 914, and the entire package delivers an immediate and highly communicative driving experience.
This is a car designed to be driven and enjoyed, rather than simply admired. The quality of its restoration, its mechanical preparation, reinforced chassis, and the rarity of some of its components make it a particularly accomplished build.
This Porsche 914 GT/6 Tribute recently received a Special Jury Award from Porsche France, recognising the quality of its restoration, the attention to detail in its preparation and the exceptional overall execution of the project.
The cost of undertaking such a comprehensive restoration, performance preparation and level of optimisation today would be exceptionally high, if not prohibitive.
Engine
This Porsche 914/6 benefits from a carefully developed engine build based on a 901/6 engine bored and stroked to 2,200 cc. The compression ratio has also been increased to 10:1, improving both performance and throttle response.
The engine is fed by a pair of high-performance Weber IDA 40 carburetors, combined with a competition exhaust system featuring independent headers. The build also includes a balanced and lightweight flywheel, a high-flow Facet fuel pump, and a Facet fuel pressure regulator.
Electronic MSD ignition completes the engine preparation. Engine oil cooling has also been upgraded with a front-mounted oil cooler, fitted with an air deflector inspired by the original 914 GT system.
Transmission
The transmission is based on a 901 Dog Leg gearbox from a 1971 Porsche 914, combined with a Quaife limited-slip differential. A Porsche Quickshift system shortens the gear lever throw and provides a more precise shifting action, further enhancing the car’s sporting character.
Chassis and Suspension
The chassis has been reinforced according to the principles used on the original 914 GT, including additional sheet-metal reinforcement around the rear longitudinal members and across the entire lower section of the passenger compartment.
At the front, the 911 3.2 front suspension is fitted with Bilstein Sport dampers and larger-diameter 24 mm torsion bars. An adjustable Weltmeister anti-roll bar further improves handling precision and body control.
At the rear, the original 914 suspension is retained, upgraded with Koni Racing dampers and a Porsche 914/6 anti-roll bar. The combination provides a firmer, more precise chassis while preserving the characteristic balance of a mid-engine sports car.
Braking System
The front brakes have been upgraded with components from a 911 3.2, fitted with Ferodo DS2500 brake pads, providing increased braking performance and improved resistance to heat under demanding driving conditions.
The original rear braking system is retained, complemented by an adjustable brake bias valve to fine-tune braking distribution between the front and rear axles.
Weight Reduction and Equipment
In keeping with the focus on performance and weight reduction, the electrical system has been simplified. The front headlights have been converted to a manual activation system, eliminating the original electric mechanism and contributing to overall weight savings.
Together with the chassis reinforcement, upgraded cooling system, improved fuel delivery and electronic ignition, the entire specification follows a clear performance-oriented philosophy.
The result is a thoroughly optimized Porsche 914/6 mid-engine sports car, combining the character of the flat-six engine with a close-ratio sporting transmission, reinforced chassis and upgraded braking system.
Additional Equipment
The car is also equipped with a seat-belt mounting system, complementing the chassis reinforcement and the overall focus on performance and safety.
A pair of CIBIÉ auxiliary driving lights completes its authentic racing-inspired look.
