Porsche 964 Carrera 2

Porsche 964 Carrera 2

Coupé, 1990

Highlights

  • First registered in Germany & accident-free history
  • Extensive engine overhaul
  • A meticulously built 964 with all modifications officially registered

This Porsche 964 Carrera 2 is the result of an idea that was consistently pursued and implemented over several years. As a vehicle originally delivered in Germany with an accident-free history, it provided the ideal foundation for my personal vision of a 964 that is technically and visually harmonious.

While I was working at CCS Racing in Cham—a specialist shop focused on classic Porsches—the car was built between 2014 and 2016 with great care and a clear objective. The goal was neither a restoration faithful to the original nor an extreme restomod, but rather a meticulously built 964 featuring targeted technical optimizations and a timeless appearance that remains true to the original.

The vehicle in detail

I purchased this Porsche 964 Carrera 2 in the summer of 2014 after a long and thorough search.

The deciding factors were that it was originally delivered in Germany through the Porsche Center in Hamburg, its accident-free history, and its exceptionally good condition.

At the time of purchase, I was working at CCS Racing in Cham, a specialist shop focused on classic Porsches.

Starting from a personal idea, a 964 took shape there over several years, allowing me to implement many of the modifications and solutions we applied daily to our customers’ vehicles.

The goal was not to implement as many technical modifications as possible, but rather to create a 964 that feels harmonious as a whole and preserves the character of the original.

Between 2014 and 2016, the vehicle therefore underwent a comprehensive restoration.

The car was disassembled, dry-ice blasted, and the body was then repainted in the original color, Dark Blue 347.

At the same time, a complete technical overhaul was carried out, including engine and transmission rebuilds, inspection and overhaul of all suspension and brake components, as well as numerous detailed improvements.

The interior was completely disassembled, rebuilt with new original Porsche sound deadening material, and fitted with a new set of carpets.

Engine

The engine was completely overhauled.

As part of the work, the engine was converted to copper ring seals and RS-spec camshafts, and equipped with an air mass sensor.

The overhaul was complemented by a Cerakote-coated fan wheel and a new clutch.

After completion, the vehicle was tuned on the dynamometer at VGS Motorsport.

There, an initial output of 278 PS was measured.

Subsequently, a defective lambda sensor and the switching valve were replaced at Manthey Racing.

According to VGS Motorsport, an output of around 285 PS was expected after the components were replaced.

Exhaust System

The exhaust system consists of a 200-cell catalytic converter, a Cup pipe, and a rear muffler. These components were deliberately selected with drivability, sound, and full TÜV compliance in mind.

Suspension and Brakes

All suspension components were inspected.

A KW V3 coilover suspension is installed, which gives the vehicle significantly more precise handling without losing the classic character of the 964.

The brake calipers were also completely overhauled as part of the conversion.

Wheels

The car is equipped with a set of 18-inch BBS E88 wheels. In my opinion, the registered tire combination of 215/255 offers the best balance between appearance and handling.

Interior

The interior was restored with the same care as the mechanical components. The entire sound deadening was replaced with original Porsche components, complemented by a new set of carpets. The seats were deliberately refurbished only to preserve the car’s patina.

Furthermore, the vehicle features a Momo Prototipo steering wheel, a Continental radio with new speakers, a redesigned instrument cluster, a lightweight rear window, and a new windshield. The rear seats were removed, and the rear shelf was redesigned accordingly after the rear wiper was removed.

Exterior

In addition to the new paint job, the car received LED headlights, RS air intakes, and numerous subtle detail enhancements.

A carbon fiber tray was installed in the front trunk, and its cover is upholstered with vintage carpet.

A painted RS rear center panel is also included with the vehicle.

Documentation and Condition

All modifications—including the performance upgrade—are fully registered. After the work was completed, the vehicle was treated with a ceramic coating.

The instrument cluster was previously refurbished by a specialized workshop.

The vehicle’s actual total mileage is 221,500 km; it is fully documented and will, of course, be stated in the bill of sale.

Since its completion in the spring of 2017, the car has been driven exclusively with seasonal license plates (04–10) and only in dry weather.

This vehicle was not built with the intention of a future sale, but rather out of a passion for the Porsche 964 and the desire to create a technically exceptional and harmonious vehicle.

I hope this vehicle finds its way into the hands of an enthusiast who appreciates the effort, the quality of the workmanship, and the philosophy behind this build.
