The 996 Turbo is not the first Porsche 911 Turbo, but it is the first water-cooled Turbo and offers unparalleled performance. The 3.6L Mezger block that was also used in the 996 GT1 at Le Mans was adapted for the Turbo, together with 2 intercoolers and four-wheel drive, this provides 420 HP at 6,000 rpm with a top speed of 305 kilometers per hour. The engine is known for its reliability and is also praised for this.

Visually, the 996 Turbo is different from the rest of the 996 family, due to the front bumper with large air intakes and air intakes in the side screens. The brake calipers were also red and the Turbo already has the new headlights which the Carreras only got from 2002.
