The first Porsche models equipped with all-wheel drive appeared in 1989 with the 964 generation. However, these models were often criticized for their relative lack of sportiness. In 1994, Porsche launched the 993 generation, whose four-wheel-drive version was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show. The 993 Carrera 4 adopts the technical and aesthetic characteristics of the standard Carrera while introducing a new all-wheel-drive system, 50% lighter than that of the 964 generation.
In late 1995, Porsche introduced the Carrera 4S; thanks to its perfectly executed ‘Turbo Look,’ it proved even more attractive than a classic 993, notably due to its wider and more sculpted rear fenders.
The 4S indeed inherits much of the Turbo’s aesthetics, with a sportier front spoiler and side skirts. Its ground clearance is lowered compared to a standard 993 (-10 mm at the front, -20 mm at the rear), all complemented by 18-inch Turbo wheels. The 4S shares the Turbo’s chassis as well as its high-performance braking system, featuring four-piston red calipers and 322 mm (front) and 299 mm (rear) discs.
The 4S also benefits from richer equipment than the standard 993, including ‘full leather’ upholstery (which, at Porsche, also encompasses the dashboard).
Mechanically, no modifications were made. The 4S retains the 3.6 Varioram engine developing 285 hp (excluding the optional X51 version); the 272 hp variant was never offered on this model.
Approximately 30 kg heavier than a standard 993, the 4S therefore offers slightly reduced performance. However, this difference remains minimal, unless the car is pushed to its limits. In our opinion, it remains one of the most beautiful 993s ever produced.
